Older Women of the Church Should Teach the Younger Women

The letter of Paul to Titus

(Titus 2:3-5)

The older women of the Church are to teach the younger women. Older women should be:

  1. Sober
  2. High Principled
  3. Temperate
  4. Sound in Faith
  5. and Love
  6. and Endurance
  7. Reverent in Bearing
  8. Not Scandal Mongers (Gossips)
  9. Be Not Slaves to Strong Drink
  10. Set a High Standard.

Nothing is more pitiful than an older woman trying to act and dress like a teenager or college girl. They never mature. Never learn to accept their age. They spend too much money on beauty creams, botox, face lifts; and for what? Look nice, be pretty and pleasant but please act your age. I Peter 3: 1-6 says to be chaste and reverent, no outward adornments, braided hair, jewelery, and fancy clothes.

Teach the younger women to be loving wives and mothers, temperate, chaste and kind, busy at home, showing respect to their husbands. When the women do this it keeps the good reputation of the gospel. The pagans and heathens of this world watch Christian women and judge the gospel by their actions. If an unbeliever sees a wife and mother who is about 50 years old and she purports to be a Christian but has a cigarette hanging out her mouth (or worse a joint) and out of her mouth comes cursing and disrespect; when she calls her husband an "effin idiot" for some mistake he has made. Similarly she calls her son a nasty name in front of everyone. So what do Muslims (who holds her husband and son in highest regard) think? Would she ever in her wildest dreams consider converting to Christianity? How about the Mormons? Women if you claim to be a Christian you represent Christ to the unbelievers. So be sober and vigilant, aware of how you appear to the world and the new Christians. I believe there is more to these verses in Ephesians than is first apparent.

This does not mean Christian women should make themselves ugly. It doesn't mean to wear out of date, sloppy clothes. It just means to be modest. Use makeup moderately. Clean shiny hair is beautiful in itself. God's children should look nice, out of respect for God. Would you enter the court of an earthly king looking like you found your clothes in a dumpster and hadn't washed your body and shampooed your hair in 6 months? Of course not and you should enter the church building to worship God with a clean body and wearing nice clothes. I did not say wear designer clothes to a church worship service where you know other people buy their clothes at department stores or Wal-Mart. At the same time if the richest people in church wear clothes that look appropriate only for working in their yard, they are being condesending to the poor people of the congregation.

If what you wear and how you groom your hair was not important, Peter, Paul, and Jesus would not have talked about it.

There has been an unfortunate thing that sometimes happens when men of the Church teach women of the Church. There are many reasons young or old men should not be ministering or taking a personal interest in the Christian walk of the younger women of the Church. I believe that's why Paul instructed the older women (this often means widows but not always) should be teaching the women and not the men. Now this does not mean that women should not be in Church Services listening to the Pastor speak. It just means that women should not be alone with men. Similary, Paul did not mean women should not pray, prophesy and preach to the whole congregation. But they should not be teaching men in a one on one arrangement. They should not be teaching other women's husbands. Likewise, men should not be teaching other men's wives. There should always be more than two people in any kind of Christian counseling situation in which the opposite sex is present and that includes homosexual counseling. Then no disrespect can be cast upon the Christian faith.
